Free Movie Screening: The Eyes of Ghana

  • Cinemapolis Ithaca 120 E Green St. Ithaca, NY 14850 United States (map)

A story of history, identity, and reclaiming the power of our own stories.

This month, we’re especially excited to share an opportunity to come together around film, culture, and history. Keep reading for information about a free screening of The Eyes of Ghana—a powerful documentary that takes us on a journey through Ghana’s history and explores what happens when a people begin to reclaim the stories, images, and cultural treasures that have shaped how the world sees them.

And the best part? The screening is FREE!

What makes The Eyes of Ghana especially remarkable is the story behind the story.

Executive Produced by Michelle and Barack Obama, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, and co-produced by Anita Afonu and Nana Adwoa Frimpong, the film tells the story of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, through the eyes of Reverend Chris Hesse, filmmaker and Nkrumah’s personal videographer.

The film draws on extraordinary archival footage—including footage captured by Chris Hesse himself—offering an intimate look at a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history.

After screening around the world, The Eyes of Ghana finally screened in Ghana this past April. Now, it’s coming to Ithaca—and we’re thrilled to share this opportunity with our community.

We hope you’ll join us!

Come gather with us for an evening of film, history, culture, and conversation. Whether you know a little about Ghana or are discovering this story for the first time, this is an invitation to watch, listen, learn, and experience something together.
