The Learning Farm After School Program provides local schoolchildren with opportunities to engage in healthy outdoor play in a beautiful, natural setting. Here, children connect with the outdoors and discover their relationship to sustainable local food production and shared community meals. The program offers enriching, project-based STEM/STEAM activities led by visiting experts, who teach fun skills and promote teamwork. Students also receive daily homework support and a healthy, student-created snack. Both structured and unstructured play time are available, with ICSD buses transporting children from school to the farm.
The program's mission is to equip children with the tools, support, motivation, and rewards necessary to become responsible, knowledgeable, and caring individuals.

Workshop Purpose
Join us for a farm walk at Hemlock Grove Farm exploring the management of chestnuts and hazelnuts, and other perennial crops within a mature organic farming system.
Part of the Strong Roots, New Growth / Emerging Markets Workshop Series, this field-based workshop will introduce participants to perennial crop production as an opportunity to diversify farms, develop new markets, and build agricultural systems that support long-term soil health and ecological resilience.
Participants will walk through established plantings at different stages of maturity and learn directly from farmer Brian Caldwell, who brings more than 40 years of experience in organic farming. At Hemlock Grove Farm, Brian maintains perennial vegetative cover throughout his orchards of apples, chestnuts, and hazelnuts. This approach protects and improves soil health while supporting a productive and diversified perennial farming system.
The farm walk will provide an opportunity to see these practices in the field and discuss both the practical realities and opportunities involved in establishing and managing perennial crops.

Establishment and management of chestnuts and hazelnuts
Soil health within perennial farming systems
Maintaining perennial vegetative cover and managing the orchard understory
Managing mature plantings and observing crops at different stages of production
Diversifying farm production through multiple perennial crops
Market opportunities and the economic potential of tree and perennial crops
Lessons learned from more than four decades of organic farm management
Audience
This workshop is open to beginning and established farmers, orchardists, agroforestry practitioners, landowners, gardeners, and community members interested in perennial agriculture, agroforestry, organic farming, and emerging agricultural markets.
No previous experience with tree crops or agroforestry is required

Executive Produced by Michelle and Barack Obama, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, and co-produced by Anita Afonu and Nana Adwoa Frimpong, the film tells the story of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, through the eyes of Reverend Chris Hesse, filmmaker and Nkrumah’s personal videographer.
The film draws on extraordinary archival footage—including footage captured by Chris Hesse himself—offering an intimate look at a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history.
After screening around the world, The Eyes of Ghana finally screened in Ghana this past April. Now, it’s coming to Ithaca—and we’re thrilled to share this opportunity with our community.

Saturday evening will kick off with a Community Land Visioning Workshop then dinner and dancing. Everyone will get a copy of the new Land Stewards’ Community Land Visioning workbook. We will work on it together over the next year to create a vision of community land sharing. We'll complete the first page together that evening.
